Culture, Equity & Inclusion
Our Belonging@LIIBA initiatives are designed to offer member firms, and individuals from within the London insurance market, the opportunity to get involved in hands on activities that truly make a difference.
We are also happy to offer guidance and support around culture to non member firms who share our vision that the insurance sector should reflect the wider community.
Our work is guided by a diverse panel of individuals from the London insurance market, who review and offer opinion on direction. Membership of the panel is fluid and open to market individuals who are as passionate about equity and inclusion as we are.
Details about our individual initiatives are below and if you would like to be kept updated with what we are doing, join our Belonging@LIIBA distribution list or follow us in Instagram.
We would also be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining our advisory panel.

Our Mission Statement
Our mission is to increase diversity, equity and inclusion within the London insurance market through practical initiatives with our partners.
We want to showcase the opportunities and ongoing support available for people from a variety of backgrounds. We will provide the framework for member firms of all sizes to engage in positive change. Our primary focus is social mobility and we encourage the collection of data regarding social economic backgrounds.

Our Objectives
Assist
Assist LIIBA member firms in increasing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within the workplace by identifying early and existing talent from disadvantaged areas and provide those individuals with opportunities, mentoring, sponsorship and guidance via partnerships with local community groups, specific market DEI initiatives and the LIIBA membership.
Identify
Identify talented individuals from all backgrounds currently working within the London Market to become “LIIBA DEI Allies”. Allies are sponsors, mentors and supporters who are able to guide and support those from minority backgrounds not only coming into the market but throughout their career path to ensure the aim of leadership increases through capability.
Opportunity
To provide individuals from all backgrounds the opportunity to speak freely about DEI concerns they encounter in the workplace by creating a “safe space” with agreed protocols where issues can be discussed freely and confidentially.
Encourage
Encourage membership firms to offer paid work experience and/or training opportunities to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds either in or following on from full time education via recognised and appropriate partnerships, charities, and special initiative schemes.
Learning
Provide learning through information mediums, in partnership with LIIBA member or other London insurance market firms, for young adults of school / college age with practical interaction to encourage and promote working in the London insurance market as a viable opportunity for those from diverse or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Inclusive culture
Liaise with other market and regulatory bodies to encourage a positive and inclusive culture within the London insurance market through the provision of information, training, support and research.

Our Programme
Our DEI programme consists of a range of initiatives, each offering practical, action based opportunities via our partnerships with leading charities.
The direction provided by our DEI panel back in 2022, when we originally formed belonging@liiba, was to actively recruit diverse talent into the London insurance market by concentrating efforts on social mobility and supporting other young adults who experience difficulties in finding employment. Since that time, we have introduced many individuals to the market.
Whilst our work to increase diverse talent entering the market continues, we also formed alumni groups, with the aim of continuing to support those who have commenced their careers in insurance through our work.
Our work has recently diversified to include additional partnerships that we hope will bring complementary opportunities and benefits to all.
upReach Insurance Springboard
LIIBA partnered with social mobility charity upReach and officially launched the insurance springboard in February 2023.
The springboard supports university students (referred to as Associates by the charity) by introducing them to the London insurance market, providing them with insights days in London, work experience with LIIBA member firms and mentors from within the market.
The aim of the programme is to recruit insurance springboard associates in to the market once they graduate.
For details on how you can get involved in this particular initiative, please refer to the Upcoming Belonging Events and Opportunities area below.
For more information on how upReach work with their associates on our springboard, can be accessed via the button below.
More informationFuture First
LIIBA’s partnership with social mobility charity Future First was created in 2024. The charity support schools and colleges throughout the UK via an alumni network. LIIBA’s work with the charity enables students to visualise a career within the London insurance market, and regional areas that support the market.
It is important for anyone undertaking activities with Future First to be aware of, and adhere to, their safeguarding and child protection policy, which can be found here.
We have already run a London market insights event with the charity, and for details on how you can get involved in all future events and to join the LIIBA Future First hub, please refer to the Upcoming Belonging Events and Opportunities area below

More informationInspiration for All
Our newest initiative is with Inspiration for All who are a not-for-profit that seeks to tackle entrenched inequality in society, classrooms and workplaces by investing in leadership.
We have created a partnership programme that matches school leaders and business leaders from the London insurance market in a unique peer-mentoring partnership, which creates fresh perspectives, enhances leadership skills and drives social mobility.
Investing in leaders in schools is a systemic way of improving outcomes for young people, and business leaders learn from the unique insights they gain from the relationships they build.
The programme works – from almost 300 partnerships so far, 9 out of 10 participants say they’ve developed as a leader, 3 out of 4 school leaders are now more likely to stay in role, and every business leader has become a more vocal advocate for social mobility in the workplace.
For more information on Inspiration for All programme, can be accessed via the button below.
More informationThe King’s Trust
The King’s Trust charity (formally The Prince’s Trust) exists to support young people. Our work with the charity is supported by Howden Insurance Brokers through the creation and delivery of the “Get Into Insurance” programme.
We have run three successive series of this initiative, that include a selection process, a “Taster Day” outlining the objectives and approach, followed by an intense 2-week programme of insurance theory, business presentations, soft skills training, and on the job work experience to young adults seeking a career within the London insurance market.
For details of how you can get involved in the programme, please refer to the Upcoming Belonging Events and Opportunities area below.

Whilst we have our own DEI initiatives, we also work with and support initiatives managed by other areas of the market, and organisations whose efforts align with our ideas.
The detail below is not an exhaustive list as we are open to adding more partners. If you are a charity or organisation who support social mobility or are focused on supporting diversity, equity and inclusion within the London insurance market, please feel free to contact us.

This initiative is aimed at raising awareness of our profession through a structured programme with market firms each year.
Whilst focused on talent in general, their goal is to open up the London insurance market to those who would not have otherwise heard of it.

Just as importantly, we translate neuroinclusion into competitive advantage: diversity of thought strengthens judgement, risk calibration, and innovation in complex markets.
Externally, the Standard provides a credible, evidence-led signal to clients and the wider market that an organisation is serious about inclusion in practice, not just policy.

NEUROSELF SPACE

Self Space was founded to bring mental health support into the everyday, so looking after your mind feels as normal as going to the gym. We partner with 250+ organisations to offer therapy and proactive “mental maintenance” for individuals and teams – helping create workplaces where people can stay well, not just get well.
In a high-pressure, relationship-driven industry like insurance, every role is carried by a human being with a life outside their inbox. Our approach is human, flexible and grounded in real life – giving people a space to talk honestly, recharge and build the tools they need to thrive at work, not just cope. Because when organisations genuinely care for their people, they see the return in focus, creativity and performance.
We provide one-to-one therapy and coaching, workshops and leadership training that help employees build resilience, improve communication and prevent burnout, while strengthening retention and productivity across teams. We work at every level of an organisation – employees, managers and leaders – to make mental wellbeing part of how you run the business, not just a response when things go wrong.

SELF SPACEAPPRENTIS

We are on a mission to break down the barriers that prevent talented young people from accessing life-changing career opportunities.

We aim to democratise access to apprenticeship opportunities by providing free, comprehensive resources, guidance, and community support that empowers every young person to discover, prepare for, and secure life-changing apprenticeships regardless of their background or circumstances.
