LIIBA’s Report – The Innovation Imperative: Why Brokers Matter More Than Ever

Our new report, The Innovation Imperative: Why Brokers Matter More Than Ever, produced with Gracechurch and Trimstone Partners, calls for stronger support to unlock broker-led research and development and address emerging global risks, including the $2.5 trillion protection gap.

It highlights specialty brokers as the insurance industry’s R&D engine, with research showing brokers now spend around a quarter of their time on innovation – matching time spent on placement – helping to turn emerging risks such as cyber, renewable energy, political risk and supply chain resilience into insurable markets.

The report warns that outdated regulation, fragmented data and a resistance to experimentation are holding back progress, compounded by widespread misunderstanding of the broker role, with 41% of underwriters and 66% of risk managers admitting they do not fully understand what brokers do.

LIIBA therefore calls on regulators, insurers and governments to better support broker led R&D by expanding sandbox environments, modernising licensing frameworks and recognising broker investment in data and analytics as genuine research and development.
